Watching Contagion, the newest film from director Steven Soderbergh, is like youre watching a Friday the 13th Movie, and instead of a hockey mask wearing psychopath; youve got a virus. And instead of a bunch of idiot teenagers, youve got scientists and doctors. Its an enjoyable film while you are watching it, but once its over you see it for all its flaws and general emptiness.Now its not a Friday the 13th shit-fest not by any means It works on a lot of levels. The stunning direction, the cast, the editing, the way it is shot specifically the way this fictional world feels real. Its just a shame that the most crucial aspect of the movie is a muddled mess: the script by Scott Burns.
But thanks to the brilliant directorial ability of Soderbergh; the film is elevated above its frankly quite rubbish screenplay. But, Im a little conflicted on Contagion I mean, it defiantly works as an entertaining thrill ride, but Im not sure if it has succeeded on what it has set out to do. By the time the credits were rolling, I wondered if there was a point to any of what I had seen; besides Hey horrible shit happens, and sometimes thats hard to contain.All of my problems with the movie stem from an intent vs execution battle, and it raged me during the credits. I had genuinely enjoyed the hell out of the movie, but the second it ended I started to ask my self what was the point? and Did it resonate with me? well, that was when the movie started to unravel.
Contagion is a virus/quarantine film in the vein of Outbreak, telling a multi-storied reaction of a viral outbreak and tracking the attempt of people to combat/contain it. The virus in Contagion is massive, it kills people rapidly and leaves all of the public/ scientific and government personal scratching their heads as to what to do.The film consists of a huge amount of subplots; we get perspective of the event/s through at least 20 characters, mostly doctors and scientists all played by very famous people such as Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet and Laurence Fishburne. The films emotional center comes from Matt Damons character who is impossible to discuss because the events in the first ten minutes are considered spoiler territory well that, or he doesnt have much of a character to speak of.Watch free movies online
But thats the issue with the screenplay; that no body has a real character, look, you could make the argument that Matt Damon has a character; but I would say that has more to do with him being a good actor, and the U2 song played over the big scene anyway, mostly everybody in the movie is either a chess piece used to move the plot forward; or a literal device. Characters like the ones that Jude Law, John Hawkes and to an extent Kate Winslet play; serve no clear purpose other then to chew up screen-time/offer cheap pity.
To be clearer; much of the character stuff in Contagion is fine while you are watching it as the people seem to take action for a reason, or they seem to behave because of a specific motivation but the script takes a turn in the last half hour; revealing information about all the characters that is either inconsistent with what was established before, or lazy and manipulative. Some characters are blatantly forgotten about half way through.
