subject: Following The History Of Photography [print this page] The word photography started being used during the 1800s. To be more specific, it was 1839 where the actual photographic process was made public, whatever that means. Since the Obscura's existence at the time, there were a high number of "light-sensitive" materials that were tested to capture images the same way as the Obscura. According to history, the fist person to take a picture with a Photographic camera was Louis Daguerre.
The photo that Daguerre took was captured on this silver-coated sheet of Copper. The photograph was known as "the artist's studio" and was really fragile and very difficult to reproduce. This reproduction was also known as a positive process.
The negative process was developed by other artists and scientists during the 1830s. Most of them discovered other photographic techniques. For example, William Henry Fox Talbot created a calotype process, which was basically light-sensitive paper that produced a negative image. The only thing about that was it took a long amount of exposure time and only worked with inanimate objects. In other words, a person couldn't just stand there for long periods of time to get their picture fully taken. That's why most of the photos taken at that time were primarily landscape and architectural.
During the 1840s, other artists and scientists began to come up with more sophisticated techniques and discoveries. Not only did the initial procedure improve, but the exposure time began to shorten as well. This is where the game of photography began to become much more popular and much more in demand, especially amongst the rich class because they were able to afford the procedure.
Eventually photography became a separate niche in the field of art. From black and white cameras to Polaroid cameras that can produce portraits on demand. The field of photography was changing rapidly. It went from being used in a personal sense to something that changed the world of media as well.
Then one last change began to take hold and that is now digital photography. The brilliance of digital photography doesn't require anyone to buy film and the process is even easier than its ever been. Now a person can print images that are stored in a memory card.
