subject: Small Wind Power: 3 Advantages [print this page]

Small wind power is revolutionizing the way we make electricity all over the world. No longer will we be tethered completely to large power producers and the overhead wires that bring the power to our homes. In the past all power has been made in large power plants. As a society we have benefitted tremendously from the economies of scale inherent in this process. This has allowed our societies to flourish as power has been available to fuel economic growth at a very low prices.

Now, that model is changing though. Through renewable energy systems, we are starting to distribute the power generation function to homes.Small wind power, or the generation of electricity through home wind turbines, is leading the charge. It is very easy now to purchase a wind turbine kit, for example, and use it to make electricity for individual appliances or for at least a portion of the power needed for your entire house.

Small wind power has several distinct advantages over the status quo

Free power, after you have paid back your initial investment in the system - Reducing power costs is of course everyone's primary motivation for getting a small wind system in the first place. Once you have paid for the initial cost of the unit with the energy you are not having to buy from your utility, all the rest is free from then on. As prices continue to rise for power around the world, owners of small wind power units will be getting their energy for free (after a few minor maintenance expenses).

Easier to understand and install than other renewable energy options - While there are certainly other renewable energy options out there, home wind turbines are the easiest to understand and get going. Solar comes next on the complexity scale, with geothermal power being the most difficult to grasp - requiring a professional engineer to analyze and install. This makes wind power the most accessible of all the renewable energy options available today.

Wind power gives you a sense independence and control over your destiny - As prices rise and as we are made constantly aware of the lack of control we have through stories in the news every day, having a residential wind turbine at your house gives you a sense that you have a measure of control over your energy future.

Small wind power will only increase in the future as our current energy paradigm plays itself out. We will eventually have no choice but to all try to take advantage of free residential wind if we want to power our homes and not break the bank.
