subject: Dermatologist - Taking Care Of Ringworm [print this page] In starting this article, I must clear up a very common misconception about ringworm. When many of us hear about ringworm, we quickly assume that it has something to do with worms. It might come as a surprise to some to know that this is not so.
Ringworm is a fungal infection and it affects different parts of the body. Why then is it called ringworm?
It derives this name from its shape. Ringworm which is the popular name of the skin condition medically known as Tinea usually appears as round shapes. Tinea or ringworm as we have come to know it has different types and we shall be looking at some of these types.
We have already said that ringworm occurs on different parts of the body. What we would now need to know is that the part of the body where tinea occurs give is its name. Let us now look at examples.
Tinea Capitis is ringworm that is found on the head and scalp.
When ringworm occurs in the shin and beard area it is called Tinea Barbae.
Tinea Manus refers to ringworm that occurs on the palms and fingers.
Tinea Corporis is ringworm that infects the body.
Tinea Cruris refers to ringworm that is found in the groin area.
Tinea Pedis is another name for athlete's foot which we know is found on the feet and toes.
These are the different places that ringworm can occur and what it is called in each case. We already know that ringworm is a fungal infection. How and where can it be contracted?
Ringworm is very contagious and can be contracted from anyone who is already infected. Either by physical contact or contact with a surface or piece of clothing that the person has had contact with.
All the fungi needs is to come in contact with your skin and then find a break in the skin through which to get into the skin.
Some common places where you may be exposed to infection includes pool sides, locker rooms etc. It is important that you do not walk about in a locker room bare foot. Also make sure you do not just share a towel or any other piece of clothing with anyone.
Taking proper precaution to stay clean at all time is necessary to ensure you do not get infected. Even if you are already infected, you can minimize the spread on your own body by staying extra clean.
You can actually spread the infection from one part of the part to other non-infected parts. This is possible through scratching, your bedding, clothing, towels etc.
If you are infect, you should take special care to wash every piece of clothing you wear or use everyday. If the infection is on your feet, be sure to keep your feet clean and dry at all times. Wear foot wear that allows air to move freely through your toes and feet. Also wash your socks everyday.
One of the simplest ways of treating ringworm especially very new infections is the use of anti-fungal creams. This usually clears mild infections quickly.
Have you tried anti-fungal creams without seeing the desired result? It might be time to go consult with your dermatologist. A dermatologist would surely be your best bet in this type of situation.
Ensure that your skin care is properly taken care of.
