Many Mac users use the native DVD player application to watch DVD movies in Mac OS X. But when they try to use the DVD player to open the .VOB extension video files which they ripped from a DVD, the names are grey out in the file selector window. This is because DVD player can't play VOB files if you damage the original DVD folders. Then, how to play the separate VOB files on Mac?

Actually, there are several media-playback freeware out there available for playing VOB on Mac, such as, VLC player for Mac, MPlayer, Plex etc. I have tested the VLC player with 6 VOB files in a folder on my Macbook, it performed very well. Download the latest version of VLC Player for Mac in videolan.org. choose File --> Open File..., select the VOB files in VIDEO_TS folder to play the video in VLC Media Player. Here, I'll show you:



Tip: Besides watching VOB movies on your Mac, if you want to edit your VOB files in iMovie or sync them to your iPod or iPhone, you can use iSkysoft DVD Ripper for Mac to convert VOB to MP4, MOV, M4V, MP3, MKV, AVI etc. for video editing programs or portable media players. Instructions for this:

Free Download iSkysoft DVD Ripper for Mac, install and launch it.

Go to "File" menu and click "Load DVD", navigate through your VIDEO_TS folders and select the VOB file you want to convert.

Select an output format like MP4, MOV from the output format list or use the optimized presets for iPad, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, iMovie, and more.
