subject: Training a Chihuahua - 3 Tips [print this page]

I don't think I have to tell or explain about Chihuahua dogs. Probably all of you surely know about this smallest breed of dogs, don't you? They are graceful, attentive, swift moving with a saucy look. They are intelligent breed and you should respect their intelligence. Don't go on their size. They are actually big attitude dogs and are good to the kids and people only when they behave kindly and gently with them. As they don't have thick hair, their skin is very sensitive to cold. So, you need to take good care of them in the winter.

Here are 3 most important tips that you should follow while training a Chihuahua.

1. Behavior Training

Not only with Chihuahua, but with any breed of dogs, you should deal with positivity to develop good behaviors in them. However if you feel that you will teach your Chihuahua good behaviors by punishing her, then you are the most foolish one in this world. With your cruel punishments, they develop fear as well as some abnormal behaviors which are not good for you and your dog. For a happy and a healthy dog, you should be kind and polite while training them. Negative behaviors should be discouraged just by words, not by physical harassment.

2. Potty Training

It is important to potty train your Chihuahua not just because that it makes mess in the home but because it itself is also a part of good behavior training. Potty training is one of the most difficult tasks in the process of training a Chihuahua but if you use crates, then it will also become easy. As crates are den for them, they don't have an instinct to soil there. They will always try to keep that place as clean as possible. So, when they feel like relieving, they will whine to attract your attention and to tell you that they need to have a potty.

3. Dealing with Chewing problem

You must have seen a lot of dogs chewing anything that comes in their way. This happens mostly when they are puppies. In their puppyhood, they have the problem of teething. So, they chew whatever they find. It may be your brand new shoe, shirts, socks, etc. Most of the dog owners just beat them without knowing this fact. Instead you should provide any kind of chew toys to prevent them from chewing other things and to solve out this problem of teething.
