subject: Puppy Training Should Be Started Early [print this page]

Puppies can be a lot of fun and many people love having a puppy in the house. Puppy training is something that has to be completed and you want to keep in mind that this new dog will not stay a puppy forever. It is up to you to set clear definitions of what you expect from the very beginning. This can help to foster good behavior in your new puppy that will last a lifetime.

You want to make sure that you are helping your puppy to not pick up bad habits. The habits that your puppy forms now will stay with your dog into adulthood. It can be much harder to break an adult dog of bad habits compared to a puppy. You should think about this puppy as an adult when you are training.

When your puppy is not with you, it can be a good idea to kennel or crate this puppy. You may have a problem with chewing and you should correct this from the beginning. A new puppy will need constant reminder of what is expected and you do not want to ruin this by allowing your puppy to be out while not under your watchful eye.

Instead of keeping your puppy exclusive to your home during your training, you should get this puppy out and expose him to the world. There will be many encounters your puppy will experience throughout the day. You should expose your puppy to new things and this can make him more versatile. You can teach a puppy very easily and this is an advantage.

Many adult dogs are scared by stimuli. This could be loud noises, or crowds and this can easily turn into a behavior problem. Exposing your new puppy to all kinds of stimuli will help this dog get used to being out and you will not have any problems later.

Basic commands are something you will start training also with a new puppy. You want your puppy to know how to sit, come, heel and down. You will want to make sure that your puppy knows the most basic commands. Staring early can help you to foster a better relationship with a new dog and puppy training can actually be a lot of fun.
