Lets begin this discussion with the uses and benefits of essential oils. Essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds obtained from plants. These are extracted from all parts of the plant such as the flowers, herbs, spices, woods and fibers. They may be extracted by distillation, expression and solvent extraction methods. Essential oils are distinct from the normal ones and usually have unique scent and essence. They are lipophilic in nature and therefore are not soluble with water. Instead, they are usually diluted in solvents like pure ethanol, polyethylene glycol, or oils for use.

The pure natural essential oils are widely used is in the form of perfume oils, fragrance oils and massage oils. Perfumes, cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, food and drink for flavoring and for adding scents to incense sticks and household cleaning products are some of the applications where essential oils play an important role.

Carrier oils on the other hand are also sometimes extracted from plants. They are milder than essential oils and most can be used either internally or externally depending on the oil used. They can be used for all of the same reasons that essential oils can be used and are beneficial in many ways. They can also be used for massage, cooking, health applications, nutrition, and fighting germs.

Perfume Oils and Fragrance Oils may be natural or synthetic oils and are used primarily to provide a scent or fragrance. If they are synthetic they wont have any nutritional value but can be enhances to have a much stronger fragrance than natural oils. The essential oils used in perfumery applications are either used in their natural forms or as reconstituted products. Some important essential oils used in perfumery are Benzoin oil, Labdanum oil, Castoreum oil, Nutmeg oil, Oakmoss oil, Tree moss oil, Bergamot oil, lotus oil, Frangipani oil, Lavender oil etc. Essential oils can be used in aromatherapy. In this case the fumes of the oil provide healing qualities which are realized by inhaling them. The molecules of the inhaled fragrance provide the internal healing or mood altering effects.

Many essential oils have antiseptic properties while some are claimed to have an uplifting or relaxing effect on the mind and body. They possess vitamins, natural hormones, antiseptics and antibiotics and are known to show curative effects against 250 different types of ailments. They are widely used in body massages along with carrier oils and often referred as massage oils or aromatherapy oils. These aroma therapy oils are either directly inhaled to cure psychological or respiratory problems or used with massages or baths for topical applications. Many health conditions like lymphatic congestion, reduced peripheral circulation, muscle spasms, tension and anxiety, flaccid musculature and backache can be effectively treated with aromatherapy oils. Some important aromatherapy massage oils used in massage are Chamomile oil, Jasmine oil, Lavender essential oil, Rose oil, Geranium oil, Clary Sage oil, Marjoram oil, Peppermint oil, Rosemary oil, Frankincense oil, Myrrh oil, Tea Tree oil and Citrus oils.

Potpourri oils are either natural or synthetic oils used to freshen the air. The primary way that this is done is by applying heat to the oil which causes it to release its essence or fragrance into the atmosphere. The biggest difference between the synthetic potpourri oils and synthetic fragrance oils is that the oils which are made to be used as perfumes and colognes are refined more so that they can be applied to human skin without any negative side effects such as itching or rashes.
