World witnessed the very first crossover when Toyota launched RAV4 in 1994. Initially it was specifically developed for Japanese and European market but by 1996 it was also launched in US market. The huge success that RAV4 garnered created a whole category of crossovers and soon Ford entered in the category with Ford Escape and so did Subaru with its Forester brand. Recreational Active Vehicle or RAV is actually a mix of SUV and sedan and Toyota used Corollas platform for RAV4s development initially.
As soon as 1997, Toyota launched RAV4 EV, which stands for All Electric Variant. It was based on efficient NiMH batteries with warranties of up to 60,000 miles. EV version could cover distance of 190 km on single charge. Apart from EV hardtop and convertible versions of RAV4 were also launched for brief period.
First generation (1994-2000) RAV4 was offered in 2 door and 4 door body styles with choice of choosing either a 138 hp or 177 hp, 2.0 litre engines. It came equipped with a 4speed auto or 5 speed manual gearboxes. Second generation (2000-2005) RAV4 was launched in 3 and 5 door body styles with option of choosing either 2.0 litre petrol or diesel, or 2.4 litre petrol engine. Like its predecessor second generation RAV4 came equipped with either a 4 speed auto or a 5 speed manual gearbox.
Third generation (2005 till present) RAV4 includes models from 2005 till present. It is produced only in 4 door trim, however options for 2.0, 2.2(petrol or diesel), 2.4, 2.5 and 3.5 petrol engines are now included. Additionally along with traditional 4 speed auto gearbox, 5 and 6 speed transmission, both in auto and manual mode, is now available.
1ZZ FE Engine; this 1.8 litre 16 valve petrol engine was produced from 2005 till 2008and was based on VVT I technology. Another variant of the same engine was produced from 1999 till 2006. 7AFE Engine; it was 1.8 litre 16 valve petrol engine with Injection technology. 7AFE engine was produced from 1995 till 2000.
1AZ FE Engine; this 2.0 litre 16 valve petrol engine was produced from 2005 till 2008 and was based on VVT I technology. A similar version of 1AZ FE Engine was produced and used from 1999 to 2006. 1CD FTV Engine; this 2.0 litre 16 valve turbo charged petrol engine was produced from 2005 till 2008. It was imported from Japan and was based on VVT I technology.
