subject: Riding Glasses And A Helmet To Complement Them
[print this page] Because I know all too well about how easy it's to dump your bike, I would like to ask bikers across the country to think about purchasing a helmet the next time they are obtaining some riding glasses? Don't think I am trying to say that the government really needs to be permitted to force bikers to wear a helmet in a state where it is not the law. I believe in individual freedom and responsibility. If a rider chooses not to wear a helmet in a state where this is legal then they should have the right to do so.
But I do believe that we should all have a little common sense.
Where I live helmets are required by law. I started riding about 26 years back and wasn't very happy that this was the law. But obviously that was only until the night when I ended up under an 18 wheeler at 45mph after I lost control of my bike in a rainstorm. The protective gear I was wearing saved my skin from any abrasions or road burn and the helmet I was wearing saved my life.
I hit my head on the steel bar at the back of the trailer which is used to climb into the back. My helmet was cracked but not completely shattered. I was left with a very sore head and a mark on the side of it. I would imagine that I wouldn't have been so lucky had I not been wearing my helmet.
You could compare my tale to that of celebrities such as the pro football player Ben Roethlisberger and actor Gary Busey. Both of these men are lucky to be alive after having horrific accidents when they weren't wearing helmets. So in modern times, they're very big advocates of helmet wearing. We could learn a lesson from them.
Anyway, that's my story. Please think about buying a helmet when you obtain your riding glasses. I know that some of you will complain that you can't get the wind in your hair feeling' with a helmet but if you don't wear one, you could end up with no feeling at all.
