subject: Microtia Can Be Fixed [print this page]

Microtia of the earMicrotia of the ear. It may sound nasty but what is microtia? Microtia is merely a common birth defect that results in an ear deformity. It usually effects the outer ear and leaves the ear canal untouched but some extreme cases of microtia can result in hearing loss. This isn't the worst birth defect out there, though, and microia is reasonably repairable. You can always get an ear reshaping that can prevent others from ever knowing that you had microtia of the ear. The most common time to get your ear fixed up that is effected by microtia is as a child.

Microtia varies from child to child. The birth defect has a few different levels or grades that are classified by intensity and severity of the microtia. Sometimes you don't need ear reshaping or surgery to repair hearing for the child. This would mean you have grade one microtia, where the external ear is the only effected part. The second level has some hearing loss involved with the ear deformity. The ear canal is not open and so hearing through that microtia effected ear is limited. The third and fourth grades of microtia are severe enough that the ear drum and ear canal aren't formed and there is only a small external ear or no ear at all. To help children with the ear deformity of microtia, surgery is suggested at a young age. But you will need to know what severity the microtia is before you can know if surgery on the ear will help your child.

Microtia is not a very bad birth defect but it can have a negative effect on children who have this common birth defect. This is why surgery on microtia of the ear can be such a great thing. Children born with microtia can be given a chance to have their hearing restored or to have a normally shaped ear. Ear reshaping can help a microtia effected child by making them more confident Children with microtia can be helped with ear reshaping surgery. But surgery should be seriously considered for those children with more severe grades of microtia, so they can have their hearing restored.

The ear reshaping surgery is to place a normal looking ear on the side of your head in place of the microtia birth defect one. A child might like having a normal ear instead of a strange, small ear that they may be teased for in school. The surgery for microtia will be simple if it is only reshaping the ear. But there will be more involved if the level of microtia is more serious. To restore hearing to an ear will take more complex work.

Treating microtia is important so if you have a child with the microtia of the ear birth defect you will want to look at surgery options and find one that fits your child's microtia. Learning about microtia first would be a great start to see how your child is effected by microtia of the ear. This knowledge of microtia will also be useful in knowing what surgery to take part in. If the level of microtia is not that bad you may only want ear reshaping surgery on your child's birth defect. But otherwise your child's hearing may be at stake. Surgery is the best option.
