subject: Funny Blog Sites Turned Into Books [print this page] There are a lot of great blog sites out there, ones that have blown up to be so big that most of the internet knows about them and has for some time. And if you don't, then you are clearly doing something wrong. But a lot of these people begin blogging much in the way of everyone else; because they think whatever they have to say is important enough, funny enough, or controversial enough to get attention. And before they know it, they get a deal to turn it into a book.
Take The Oatmeal for example, a humor site that also uses it's sarcasm and ridiculousness to teach as well. They have funny grammar lessons, facts on animals, and for those who don't want a lesson in anything, great humor on common human interaction fails. The Oatmeal has gotten their own book of a lot of these crazy drawings, all compiled together for your viewing when you have nothing else to do during the commercials when watching TV.
Or look at ICanHasCheezburger, which is a blog posting silly cat photos with grammatically incorrect captions. That was all the internet needed, more cats, in order to have this blog blow up and be turned into its own book as well. One that I'm pretty sure a good deal of my friends already own.
How do you get your blog site turned into a book? Well, these sites had the luck of having a huge and dedicated fan base. If you have one, that works out in your favor. But if you don't, that doesn't mean what you write isn't good enough to be a book in its own. In fact, it makes pitching a book a lot easier when you already have all these blog posts already written. You've got content to actually show to publishers and you save yourself the time it takes to write a book out of thin air.
Of course, you also better be pretty funny or have a new approach to things someone else hasn't. Cats have been done, silly short stories with bad drawings to accompany them have also been done, but you probably have something even better up your sleeve. If your blog is a piece of unique content in an internet full of copies, you may have just enough to get yourself a book deal. And if not, keep building and keep pushing your posts so you get a big enough following that no publisher can ignore you when you burst into their conference room!
