subject: Considering Recording Arts? [print this page]

It is time to decide what you want to do with your life and you have decided to look into recording arts school, yes? If you are a musician and have at least a basic understanding of music as well as a talent in your preferred instrument, this should not be an issue. There are just a few things that you are going to need to think about before you jump in feet first. It is best to have proper training, a properly developed thick skin, and what the industry calls "staying power". This means that you are going to have to be strong enough to represent your talents and your selling pointyourself.

The first thing to do is to find your niche. What style of music are you looking to record? Are you into pop? That would be the most lucrative, but there are plenty of amazing bands and artists that are in other genres that are doing really well at this point in the game. Whether you are into technical rock, metal, or punk rockyou may be able to become a recording artist. Anyone can do it, it is about being able to live off of it in the long run.

Now that you have found your niche, there are other things to consider. You need to figure out how to properly market yourself to gain the attention of not only fans, but the big heads at record companies. While these days there is a greater appreciation for individuality (i.e., Lady Gaga), there is a great appreciation for aesthetically pleasing artists. This draws people in long enough to hear the music, if they are superficial enough and trust me, most people are in mainstream.

Independent Music

For those that are interested in keeping it independent, this can be beneficial too. You are able to market yourself through many different social networks. This makes it much easier to have your music be heard. Not only that, but working on an independent level also gives you more artistic freedom. You really only have to make yourself and your fans happy.

Recording and Producing:

If you want to stay behind the scenes and produce music, this is also a pretty great direction. There are many talented producers out there, but once you find something original that you can provide to other musicians, you can build a client base that has fantastic retention rates. Just consider the fact that there are plenty of talented producers out there and you really need to know your stuff when it comes down to it. You need to be truly creative and original.

In Conclusion:

It doesn't matter what your talents are, you will be able to find a very good job in the industry. Just make sure you are well trained in the recording arts.
