subject: Louisiana Tech $12 Million Fitness Addition [print this page] In a nation where obesity rates are not only climbing but hitting what seems like younger generations each decade, some schools and universities across the country are taking proactive measures to prevent the disease from spreading to their students. Louisiana Tech University is in the process of approaching health and fitness in a whole new way, by opening a $12 million addition on their campus.
For those Louisiana Tech students interested in workouts such as Insanity, Tai Cheng and the Asylum but are limited to their campus will soon have a new option. The university is planning to unveil an addition to the Lambright Intramural Sports Center later this month. Included in the additions are an indoor competitive pool, an outdoor recreational pool (complete with a cabana and sundeck), a rock-climbing wall and a wellness center.
The idea behind this expansion is to promote a healthy lifestyle, although, the outdoor recreational pool is designed for having fun. The pool has curved sides perfect for lounging and aquatic recreation activities. Its also the perfect place to combat stress during finals or enjoy a sunny Louisiana-style day.
But just as exercise isnt the only aspect of a healthy lifestyle, it isnt the only thing provided to Louisiana Tech students by this $12 million addition. There will also be a space for healthy food offerings, called Counter Culture. For those too busy taking in the sun to find food, Counter Culture offers pool-side service. Additionally, there is a 29-foot tall rock climbing wall and a new facility with brand new locker rooms, quick-dry machines for bathing suits and towels, and a second floor filled with work-out equipment.
Eventually, the school hopes to incorporate the students majors and focuses of study to the operations of the facility. For example, students in the nutrition program can help other students make healthy food choice options, and students studying fitness can act as personal trainers at the gym. By doing this, not only will the students learn by doing, but the university can cut back on personnel costs.
Although the wellness center of the facility wont be ready at the time of the soft opening, the wellness center will include exam rooms, classrooms, and counseling opportunities. The center aims to be a one-stop-shop for all health and education advisement. Hopefully, this recreation and fitness facility will merely be the first of its kind, and healthy lifestyles can begin when it matters most.
