subject: Faster And Safe Passage Of Ships With Retractable Flettner Rotors [print this page]

The transport industry like all other industries has been growing ever since technologies have been coming up to aid the process of evolution. With the growing demand for faster and safer passage for people, goods and cargos increasing, the need for technologies that provide this fast and safe passage is increasing too. And the new technologies that are coming up each day are meeting these demands of the global transport industry spectacularly. Like one of the latest technologies in the block of the shipping industry, RFR, the abbreviation for retractable Flettner rotors. This is the up gradation invention of Flettner rotors which was a revolutionary invention in the shipping industry itself. The Flettner rotors have helped the shipping transport industry move quite a few steps forward in fast and safe transport of goods. Now the introduction of retractable Flettner rotors has completed the picture.

Before RFR came into the picture, Flettner rotors were used by E ship 1 that use wind power to propel the ship forward with the help of the principle of Magnus effect. The retractable Flettner rotors use the same technology of wind power and the principle of Magnus effect. You must be wondering then where lies the difference or the up gradation? The Flettner rotors used by the E ship are four fixed large tower like masts on the deck of the ship. These large structures stop the E ship from entering many ports all over the world since it is seen as a threat to the cranes that are used for loading and unloading cargos at different ports. Hence the access to the ports of the world is limited since it is not accepted in all ports. The up gradation of the Flettner rotors or the RFR has overcome this single barrier that was stopping this revolutionary invention from being used in every cargo ship in the world. The Flettner rotors, like the name suggests, has been made retractable i.e. the rotors can be pulled back to enable the ship to enter all ports.

The retractable Flettner rotors still uses wind power and the principle of Magnus effect to make ships move faster while making the passage safer. But by becoming retractable, it has now overcome the barrier that stopped it from being used by every ship. Every ship today, old or new, can use this revolutionary invention to help their ship reach destination faster but safely.
