subject: Tips On Choosing Godparents [print this page]

After having a baby, you find yourself tasked to look for its Godparents. It is a very important task in the beginning days of your child's life. However, over the years the role of Godparents has been highly compromised. These parents over time have dissolved into the background and never play any active role in the lives of the children they should represent. They are just present during the child's baptism and the relationship simply gets cut.

Your child needs a mentor outside the family. They are icons who help your child grow well in relation to spiritual matters. This means you should choose responsible individuals who won't forget that they have a role in encouraging, mentoring and spiritually supporting your child. What should consider when choosing a Godparent?

Avoid picking a friend as your child's Godparent. This is because friends can move without warning, meaning you lose touch when they do so. Additionally, they may never take the role entrusted to them seriously. It is crucial if you chose an outside family member that you are sure is responsible enough and who is likely to honor that role. It is important they share your faith, since this makes them feel at home. It would prove difficult to mentor a child in line with their faith when the mentor belongs to another.

The best Godparent is the one with a deep religious faith. They should be prayerful and upright spiritually. This is crucial to ensure your child takes seriously whatever the mentor talks about. Godparents of questionable character never appeal in anyway to the children they mentor.

A sincere interest in your child is another important thing to consider. No mentor can be responsible enough if they have no concern in regard to the life of your child. Choose an individual with excellent listening skills, high moral character and again, the potential to be a role model.

A Godparent should take seriously all of your wishes in relation to your child. In the event of your demise, this helps the individual mentor your child like you had planned. If you have to write a Will, including these wishes in the document is a wise decision. It is of immense help too to make your child familiar and comfortable with the Godparents. This helps them create a rapport, hence the child is sure to be comfortable when receiving guidance from the Godparents in case there is need.

Talking to your prospects prior to making your decision is advisable. It helps you ensure that they share the same vision as you do. It is also helps in determining whether they are willing to assume the role. If they are ready, there is a high chance that they won't fail you. The biggest gift your child can get from their Godparent is time. If your prospects are unlikely to sacrifice enough of their time to the cause, just look elsewhere.

When choosing Godparents you need to be keen since you might get ones that do not perform the duties as expected. This should not upset you. You should in-fact play an active role in encouraging a relationship between them and the child.
