subject: Abc News Brings Attention To A Unique Way For Californians To Find Unclaimed Money [print this page]

The study shows that California is not the only one in its struggle with unclaimed money. Most states in the union are actually facing figures over a million when it comes to unclaimed property. While California is holding over $6 billion, Ohio and Michigan are sitting on over a billion dollars each and Texas has over two billion in unclaimed property. Wondering how cash becomes unclaimed? California residents might not know that they have unclaimed property sitting in government accounts. This can come from unclaimed property, unclaimed utility deposits, unclaimed safety deposit boxes, un-cashed checks and unclaimed lottery wins. The report by ABC also states that Californians might also have unclaimed property in other states.

How to get unclaimed money. This new study states that most governments go through great lengths to alert the public that they may have unclaimed money in their name. The measures these state governments put into place are a good effort, but oftentimes they are not enough to get the increasing unclaimed property totals under control. California is one of many states that actually set up fairs and different events that help to announce the unclaimed money amounts. TV and radio stations and even the newspapers have tried to do their part. But still, the amounts of unclaimed property continue to increase.

It may pay to look. To help California and other states lower the unclaimed money amounts they have in government coffers, a new database is offering lookers an unclaimed money search for free. CashUnclaimed.com allows visitors to put on a search in accounts held by the government for all 50 states and several Federal Treasury accounts. If the person does actually have unclaimed property sitting around, Cash Unclaimed will inform them of where their money is and how to get it.

This ABC report was a recent try to reach out to the large Los Angeles population in hopes that individuals will finally come forward to account for the more than $6 billion currently being held. With California facing economic troubles, more so than other states in the U.S., many Californians would probably love an additional twenty, $200 or $2000 in their bank accounts. That unclaimed money may come at a time when it is really needed most. Hopefully this ABC report and Cash Unclaimed can help California lessen the total of unclaimed property it is holding onto.
