subject: Facelift Surgery For A Younger Face [print this page]

Many women as well as men opt for a facelift or procedures like stem cell facelift to get a younger and firmer looking skin. A facelift improves ones facial contour and reduces fine lines and wrinkles, giving a long-lasting effect.

There are also a few things to consider before going for this surgery. One needs to have realistic expectations and understand that it will only tighten the excessive loose skin on the face and neck. A strong bone structure and well-defined jaw line also helps. It is preferable that the persons skin has some suppleness and flexibility. People who suffer from illnesses like asthma, diabetes, hypertension or a cardiovascular disease are advised not to go for this surgery.

If one meets the criteria, preoperative instructions are provided which include quitting smoking as it interferes with the treatment and naturally causes skin to age; and stopping the intake of blood thinning medicines like aspirin.

The surgery is outpatient and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision which extends downward behind the ear along its natural curve. This ensures that the scars remain hidden. If excess skin is to be removed from the neck area then the incision is made under the chin. The facial skin is then taken apart from the underlying tissues. After removing the required excess skin, the facial skin is moved in a way that the skin will give a more firm appearance. The skin is then sutured and dressing is used to protect the wounds. If the patient wishes to remove excess fat as well, it can be done using liposuction. The face lift surgery may be combined with other cosmetic facial procedures like the blepharoplasty which is eyelid surgery.

After the surgery is successfully completed, the patient will take a minimum of 2 weeks to recuperate during which any exhausting activity should be shunned. Some swelling may occur around the surgical area. Such swelling generally settles down in a couple of days, but if it doesnt keeping the head at an elevated level when sleeping will help reduce the swelling. Also, drainage tubes may be positioned to lessen the swelling and remove any excess blood. The patient may also experience tautness in the facial skin. The doctor will also advise one to walk as it improves blood circulation and will prevent blood clots from forming.

There are options available for those wanting a less invasive procedure. Some of them are:

Laser resurfacing

Microdermabrasion

Botox injections

Chemical peels

Fillers/Facial implants

Apart from these, the newest procedure is the stem cell facelift. It is a procedure in which the persons own stem cells are used in the treatment. In a stem cell facelift, stem cell-enriched fat which is taken from another site of the patients body is injected in the face. This injected stem cells turn into new skin cells. No anesthesia is used in this procedure. Since no scalpels are used, that is, no incisions are made stem cell facelift has no risk of scarring. Not only is this procedure more affordable compared to other methods, it is also safer and provides a more natural look.
