If the first page of google has a bunch of sites ranked 5 or higher that that term is too competitive and you should pick a different one.
Page rank of your competition cannot be overlooked. Google ranks pages from 0 to 10 and the higher the page rank the more of an authority google sees it. It is not easy to move a site with high page rank off of the first page of google so watch out for pages that have a high rank. If you see too many for your term and you try to compete with them you will be wasting your time.
So these are some of the main things that can either help you or hurt your results in getting listed in google. Make sure the competing sites are low and also make sure that you do not try to compete with sites that have a google page rank of over 4. I or 2 on the first page may not hurt but if page one is full of them then pick a new keyword phrase.
