Daniel DeKoter, an experienced attorney, graduated with a Bachelors degree in Philosophy and English in 1977, from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While pursuing his degree, he was a member of the dormitory council and also wrote for the student newspaper, the Calvin Chimes. Prior to this, he attended the Maurice-Orange City High School, until 1973. At the school, he was a National Merit Finalist, and was also awarded the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Senate Youth Program scholarship. From 1977 to 1980, he attended the University of Iowa Law School, whereby, he graduated in the top 20% of his law school class. In 1980, he passed the Iowa bar examination and completed his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa, and thereafter, he joined Corcoran, Skiver and Zito law firm in Sibley, Iowa.

DeKoter, Thole & Dawson, P.L.C, originally known as Corcoran, Skiver and Zito law firm, was founded in 1936, with an aim to meet the legal needs of people through dependable legal services that recognize the clients as well as the firms commitment to fairness and justice. Daniel DeKoter is a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated lawyer and a general practitioner who works in the areas of civil litigation (personal injury, insurance defense, and business disputes), business and employment law, and estate planning, trusts, and wills. He is presently serving on the Village Northwest Unlimited Board and East Oaks Estates Property Owners Association. He is a past member of the Sibley Library Board, Iowa State Bar Association Legal Forms Committee (chair), Northwest Iowa Humane Society (president), as well as several church boards.

In addition to being a knowledgeable and experienced legal professional, Daniel DeKoter is fond of reading non-fiction, fiction, as well as books on history, political analysis and mystery. He is an avid traveler and enjoys sightseeing. During summers, he enjoys boating and participates in a golf league in Sibley on Thursdays. Owing to his passion for reading, he contributes nearly $3,000 annually to local libraries and schools. Over the past 5 years, he has donated to the Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District; the Sibley Public Library; the Ocheyedan Public Library; the Ashton Public Library; the Melvin Public Library; the Sanborn Public Library; and the George Public Library. Through their law firm, Daniel along with Michael E. Thole and Harold D. Dawson, also provide free legal services to charitable institutions.
