Whereas, brolly is a colloquial word often used in countries like Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya and South Africa. In different countries umbrellas have different names. For example, in Britain umbrellas are called gamps.
Umbrellas are used by human beings from a very early period. Even, umbrellas were used in the kings chariots. In Egypt, people used to use umbrellas more than any other country. And, the umbrellas are still found in a variety of shapes. In Ancient Greek, during the 5th century BC, umbrellas were used mostly by the females. Umbrellas are in use n China from 21 AD. The uses of collapsible umbrellas are more in use in China. Umbrella was initially designed to get a protection from the sun. Later, Chinese had made waterproof umbrellas to get protected from rains.
During the 16th century, umbrellas became popular in the western part of the world especially during the monsoons in Northern Europe. Initially umbrellas were mostly used by the females but later slowly males also started using it. In England, the first umbrella shop opened in 1830 and was called James Smith and Sons. The shop has never been moved to any other place and still can be found in the same place. In early Europe umbrellas were made of whalebone and wood and covered with oiled canvas and alpaca.
The reason of umbrellas is still the same but the designs have changed a lot. Now people dont use umbrellas to get protected from rain and excess heat of sun but umbrella is a part of fashion now. Fashionable umbrellas can be found even in schools. Though, most of the male students prefer raincoats to use during the rainy days. Even raincoats come in variety of colors and designs. Colorful and different shapes of umbrellas are common among the female students. The monsoon days are always beautiful, not only for its calm and pleasant weather but, also for the fashion that we can in schools. However, the fashion is not based on dresses of the students but on their umbrellas.
