subject: A Technical Review Of The Pentax K5 Dslr [print this page]

The market for cameras is mind-boggling, and the sub-market for SLR's is smaller but still impressive. The major camera makers constantly add to their model lines, and the Pentax K5 DSLR is that company's new release. The amateur photo hobbyist should take some time to examine what it offers. Strong competition for camera market share will continue giving you new choices on an indefinite basis. The wide range of capabilities found in the K5 are actually more than enough for the average user. Pentax seems to have tried to cover the most important areas for improvement. Much stronger sensing specifications and other innovations are found in the Pentax K5 DSLR.

When it comes to improvements in sensing and image processing, the K5 represents a lot of concerted effort. A lot of time you will read about CMOS technology which is not new, at all, however it has been refined over the years and still continues to be. Another way to think of CMOS is they are IC's, or integrated circuits. The ability to detect and sense images on a larger scale happens to be just one of the many new abilities in the K5.

But that is not all because as we said, you will enjoy a higher rate of data integration and display. The digital photos you can take will be of impressive quality and detail which is really resolution. If you are familiar with megapixels, and that is a common term, then think of the K5 in terms of 16 megapixels. One thing that may be slightly deceptive about the K5 is its size. The Pentax K5 is diminutive in appearance, and you will wonder how something so small can do so much. However, it will all make a little more sense when you discover that it weighs more than you may expect. The weight in your hands is actually a good thing as it is a clue of to all it can do. The K5 chassis is made from stainless steel which will make it more durable. The main body material makes use of an alloy of magnesium for lightweight characteristics. The alloy is also preferred in the interest of keeping the cost down. What is amazing about this unit is the presence of eight seals used to protect the internals.

Some feedback has mentioned situations in which there was under-exposure in the final result. But that may not be a problem, and it just will be based on how tight your requirements are. The K5 will deliver great photos if you want to take them using lower ISO settings. If you have a need for better results with dim light shots, then we think you will be happy with what you can do. Manual focus is the only option with video, so that may or not be a problem area for you.

CMOS is such a versatile circuitry application, and of course Pentax was smart to use it in the K5. The ability to process more at higher speeds is all thanks to CMOS. For the general public, though, they just want a great digital SLR that takes fabulous pics. Do take the time to see what else is available with the Pentax K5 because there is considerably more.
