subject: What Companies Can Do To Promote Workplace Occupational Health And Safety [print this page]

Since employees spend most of the day at the office, it's important for a company to look into its workplace occupational health and safety guidelines to make sure that they're personnel are kept safe at all times. While one aspect is to ensure that the backgrounds of the applicants they hire are checked, a company should also look into promoting their health and safety policies. Here's an office safety checklist of the things they can do to get the message across.

First, a company should brief all its new hires during their induction. This will allow them to become familiar with the company's health and safety guidelines right from the start. During the induction, it's important that the new hires be provided with a copy of these guidelines and each one should be discussed in detail.

Second, a company should provide training to new and current employees about its safety and emergency procedures. One important thing that a company needs to highlight is how to evacuate properly in case of fire or other natural calamities. That way, if anything happens, the employees will know what to do and not panic during the actual crisis.

Third, an office should place contrasting colors on steps or pathways so that they can be seen by employees during evacuation. Markings and signs should also be in place to help guide them on where they should go. Additionally, for handicapped employees or those in wheelchairs or crutches, a ramp should be added to make it easier for them to move around.

Fourth, an office must provide its employees with access to all safety information and guidelines. This can be done by placing all the information in a public server that can be accessed by the staff. They can also be updated via e-mail whenever a new guideline is created. Another option is to create a website that employees can visit.

Fifth, a company must always provide its employees with proper training of new safety equipment and machinery. That way, when a crisis occurs, they will know how to use these safety devices when the time comes.

Sixth, despite training employees upon hiring, a company should find the time to conduct re-training to refresh the memories of its employees about its health and safety guidelines. That way, they will always remember what to do when the need calls for it.

A company should always prioritize its employees' workplace occupational health and safety. Since it's these personnel that help the company succeed and meet its goals, they should be well taken care of and kept safe at all times.
