subject: The Smart Phone Revolution [print this page]

How many times have you been out in the car driving or on your morning train commute and realized that you left your gsm cell phone at home? Don't you immediately feel a sense of nakedness like you left something vital to your day behind? Can you survive the day without your smartphone? Sure. But when is the last time you tried to live a day sans gsm mobile phone? I bet it's been awhile.

When the cell phone was first introduced into society it was a bulky, cumbersome piece of exclusive equipment. If you had a car phone in the eighties or nineties you were considered a rich person. These were only used on long car trips or by executives. Later they became a pocket device that was used by the same kind of people.

Soon, however, this technology became smaller and soon gsm cell phones could fit in your pocket. This was a great way to keep in touch with family and friends. As the phones got smaller, the prices went down. This made it more accessible to the general public and more and more people were joining the mobile craze.

Soon, text messages came into the picture and we could communicate without actually speaking a word. This became so incredibly popular in the early 2000s and continues a strong trend even twelve years later.

With the addition of the ability to play music on your gsm mobile phone and the internet being integrated with the smaller technology it seems everyone has a cell phone and they have their faces buried in it twenty four hours a day seven days a week.

With the rise of social media it would seem, on the surface that we are connected to more people than ever before thanks to our gsm mobile phones, but is that true? How often have you heard the phrase "I should get this" or "I'm sorry, I just need to send this quick text"? It's becoming more and more acceptable to be on your phone at the table, on the train, in a meeting, and even in the bathroom!

Statistics like 37% adults and 60% teenagers admit to being addicted to smartphones mean that the takeover of the gsm cell phone is almost complete. Everyone uses them and claims they can't get through the day without them. Still, they are a reliable, amazing, and necessary component in our lives.
