subject: Social Media In Poland Over Half Of Poles Use Social Networking Websites [print this page] As many as 54% adult Poles (over 18 years old) say that they use social media, with the highest percentage of social network users, 82%, among respondents aged 18-24, followed by 47% in the age group 35-64 and by the definitely lowest rate of 30% among respondents aged over 65.
Poles mainly use Facebook (40%) and nk.pl (37%). As regards the age structure, the percentage of nk.pl users is rather stable while the percentage of Facebook users is changing. Respondents aged 18-24 report using such social networking services as: Facebook (74%), nk.pl (40%) and Twitter (2%) whereas those in the age group 25-34 use Facebook (58%), nk.pl (45%) and Twitter (4%). Every fifth Pole aged over 65 has a Facebook account.
Among the respondents who reported using social networking services 58% visit their favourite website every day, while among those aged 18-24 the figure is 74%. As to time consumed by such activity, 28% of the respondents say that every time they log in to a social networking website they spend there 5-10 minutes, 27% report half an hour and 28% an hour.
Why do Poles use social networks? The survey carried out by PMR Research shows that as many as 86% respondents using social media do it to keep in touch with friends, only 13% use them to make new acquaintances, 8% want to play online games and as few as 4% use social media for business purposes. Half of the respondents aged over 65 declare that they use social media to renew old acquaintances, the same as every third respondent in the age group 35-64. When answering this question it was also possible to give other reasons and the most frequent ones were "looking for information" and "keeping up to date", as well as "pursuing political goals".
The survey included questions which elicited negative answers in a vast majority of cases. For example: 91% percent of social media users claim that they do not use such websites for private purposes at work, 88% claim that they are not brand fans in social media and 87% do not use smartphones to access their accounts.
Summing up, the survey conducted by PMR Research demonstrates that more than half of Poles are social media users, mainly of Facebook and nk.pl. They make use of such media chiefly to stay in touch with friends (86%). A significant majority of the users visit their accounts every day (58%). Only one in ten adult Polish users of social media admits to using them at work.
PMR Research conducted the countrywide consumer telephone survey in October 2011 on a representative sample of 1000 adult Poles. The standard error did not exceed 5%.
