subject: Acupuncture For Fertility [print this page]

As strange as it may sound to westerners, acupuncture for fertility is a legitimate treatment which has been used successfully by eastern medical practitioners for centuries. Most people know that acupuncture exists, and have at least some vague sense that it can be used for maladies such as back pain and headaches, but few are aware that it can't help with fertility.

The body has energy fields which flow throughout it. Conventional western science and medicine do not acknowledge these energy flows, but they are well known and well understood by eastern, oriental science.

If the body's energy flows become clogged like arteries, disease and health problems result. Clogged energy flows are not merely a result of disease, they are also a cause of it. Removing clogs from the body's energy flows can cure disease, and improve overall health, including fertility.

Many westerners live stressed lives and eat high calorie food which is almost totally devoid of nutritional value. They also don't exercise enough. Fat, stressed, and overworked, their bodies don't function well, or normally, and their energy flows become disrupted. The huge amount of health problems created by this lifestyle are well documented, including reduced fertility.

Energy flowing throughout the body joins at junction points called nodes. In the unhealthy, energy becomes jammed or backed up at nodes rather than flowing through them. Thin needles inserted into the body at these nodes can relieve the energy jam, causing energy to flow again. The energy flows within the body and exterior to it are kick started, and the body's normal flow of energy resumes.

Acupuncture can balance energy flows, but they will once again become unbalanced if a person continues their unhealthy habits. Most westerners are too weak and undisciplined to change their lifestyle, so any energy correction will be but temporary. However, the change of becoming pregnant is greatly increased during these temporary periods of energy balance.

All infertility cannot be cured. Acupuncture cannot help everyone. It can improve the odds of procedures such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), or donor-egg transfer.

Getting pregnant is of little use if the woman miscarries, which is the unfortunate reality for many women trying unsuccessfully to have children. They can get pregnant easily, but then have miscarriage after miscarriage after miscarriage. Most miscarriages occur in the first 90 days of pregnancy, acupuncture can reduce the potential of a miscarriage. Some mothers worry about needles being placed in the womb, this is never done.

In a few cases, acupuncture has restimulated egg production in women. Women who had stopped producing eggs began producing them again, though this effect was never observed in women who had already reached menopause.

Miscarriage risks can be exacerbated if acupuncture is performed on certain areas of the body. Acupuncturists who are experts in fertility know these points and avoid them. Most states require acupuncturists to be licensed. A legally licensed acupuncturist can help women who have struggled with miscarriages and insemination, allowing them to use acupuncture for fertility.
