subject: Go For A DIY Chook House Instead Of Paying For A Built One [print this page] I have looked around for ready-made chook houses and I have to say I am not impressed. Of course, I guess it is like anything; everything that seems to be in your price range looks beat up and run down, and when you finally do find one that looks nice, they want a small fortune for it!
Well, I am pretty handy with a hammer and nails, but my problem is that I have no eye for design. I don't have a problem building a DIY chook house, but if I design it myself, it is going to look like a box on stilts. This is why I have decided to buy some plans online. I figure I can spend the money on plans that I would probably waste on over-engineering my own design and get something that looks nice. Heck, I will probably save quite a bit, which will be great since I want to automate it as much as I can.
I have seen some designs that I like, and I think the one I like the most is a chook that has the nesting boxes jutting out from the wall on the outside. This way, you can just upen the lid and there are the eggs. I like it when it is easy. I do want to be able to get inside it easily as well. I figure I will have to get in there to do some cleaning every now and then, so it will have to be tall and wide enough for me to fit.
