subject: Much Ado About Contact Lenses [print this page]

Poor vision is becoming an increasing problem which people have to deal with. Often time people wear glasses, but glasses come with a range of annoyances and disadvantages. This is why contact lenses are becoming an increasingly popular solution. Once a user has adjusted to the practice of placing the lens on his or her eye, they find them very enjoyable to wear. One can forget that they are even wearing them as it feels completely natural and can feel like you have perfect vision. Unlike glasses, which you can see the frames of while wearing, contacts allow the user to fully utilize their peripheral vision. That is the single biggest advantage, and it makes them an excellent choice for anyone who plays sports or leads an active lifestyle.

Additionally the quality of contact lenses has vastly improved over the years. What was a nuisance and discomfort has become a simple and effective choice in correcting ones vision. A range of lenses are available for people to use. They are often classified by the material (rigid/soft) and how long they can be used before needing to be disposed of and a new pair used.

As contacts become more comfortable for the wearer, the wearer is more able to wear the contacts for an entire day with little to no discomfort. In fact, recent advances in technology are beginning to allow for contacts to be worn for days on end without having to take them out at night. These types of lenses are called extended wear contacts, and they can be worn for up to six days straight.

Even newer lenses, known as continuous wear lenses, can be worn for up to a month at a time. These are made from silicon hydrogels which allow for increased oxygen permeability. It simply means that they are less likely to cause complications to the eyes. Extended and continuous wear contacts allow about five times more oxygen to pass through. This is enough to make them sufficiently safe and comfortable even with eyes closed.

For many people, single use contacts are an excellent option for those who do not wear contacts everyday, but instead for an occasional sporting or similar activity. They are known as daily disposable contacts because they are made for single use and one disposes them each night. For many people single use lenses are not the best option, as it would be costly to wear a new set every day.

Many use contacts that are designed to be worn everyday for a set amount of time (typically either two weeks or four weeks.) It is best to choose contacts based on a replacement schedule which fits your lifestyle. Although they are typically made from the same material. daily disposable contact lenses are thinner and not meant to be as durable. In comparison, two week lenses, four week lenses, or longer are typically soaked in a saline or hydrogen peroxide solution overnight in order to clean them.

Choosing the proper contact lens for your lifestyle can greatly improve your life, and expose you to a visual world which you have been missing out on. Not only that but much of the discomfort which people also associate with contact lenses is becoming a thing of the past. Modern lenses are superior in comfort, ease, and affordability.
