subject: What to Wear When Appearing in Court for Divorce [print this page]

Court appearance is something that you will have to deal with when you are in the process of getting a divorce. How you dress and how you look like is something that will make a lasting impression with the judge. Similar to applying for a job, it is very important that you wear something decent and appropriate when appearing in court. The least thing that you want is to be judged based on your appearance.

Your lawyer can easily help you out with the right way and wrong way when it comes to dressing up for court appearance. Make sure that your hair is neatly cut and combed before going to court. If you have a beard or a mustache, make sure that it is trimmed and shaved well, or shave it off entirely for a clean-cut look. Your nails should be neatly filed and cut.

For clothing choices, you'll never go wrong with wearing a neutral colored suit, a pair of dress slacks, dress shirts, sweaters and jackets. Always complete the ensemble with a pair of formal shoes made up of leather. Do not wear hats or caps during an appearance, this shows utter disrespect to the court. Also, refrain from wearing clothes and shoes that are too casual like slippers, rubber and canvas footwear.

Remember that first impressions last. Make sure that you create an impression that you are serious with the divorce or custody case that you want to pursue. No matter how strong your case is, if you don't look serious, your efforts might be worthless. Choose the right clothes to wear and you'll be assured that you'll get that decision in no time.
