subject: Components And Features That Constitute Modern Day Police Sirens [print this page]

Modern police sirens come with a variety of components which make it a powerful piece of equipment capable of providing great assistance to the crew of emergency vehicles during a very critical situation. A very good example is the 2 100 Watt speakers provided with good sirens to offer a high decibel level to the tones. The number of tones provided with the siren vary but top quality equipment come with as many as 12 to 17 different tones including piercer, Yelp, Hi-low and the default wail. Scan Lock mechanism can be used to easily browse through the siren tones present in a police siren and pick the one that suits the situation perfectly.

In some police sirens, it is actually possible to integrate the emergency lighting, flashing and siren tones so that the combined signal is much more functional and powerful. The police siren equipment comes with a fully functional control module which will allow users to make the most of the available features and components. There are special push button switches for tone selection. Dip switches are also provided in some sirens. Similarly, there are switches that can be used for overriding the siren tone selected and instead using the default tone. There is also a push to talk button and a radio transmission button both of which can override the original siren tone to provide other functions like the radio repeat or public address.

It is possible to use the police sirens to address crowds and therefore the equipment helps in crowd control as well. A heavy duty microphone is invariably part of the equipment. There is also an optional plug in microphone with pre-set volume levels that is provided as part of the equipment kit. The pre-wired unidirectional microphone provides additional functionality. There are knobs for adjusting the radio repeat and microphone volumes as required. A high quality police siren can provide a horn ring transfer switch as well. The equipment comes with protection for output short circuiting and input polarity issues. There is a special button for horn and ring control and bi-polarity activation along with activation of siren tones through input.

Police sirens are designed for under dash mounting as well as for height and angle adjustable mounting to make sure that their output is optimized, efficient and effective. They use a 12V DC power supply. There is a PA volume control knob for the siren tones along with a frequency control knob too, with low frequencies used for greater penetration when required. Momentary recessed, slide button and dip switches are provided to take charge of different functions provided by the kit itself. Interestingly, some types of police siren equipment can actually complement the lighting offered by dash, deck or visor lights. The sirens with low amperage and spade type fuse are designed to adhere to Class A requirements. There are some compact sirens mountable even in tight corners with remote control features and easily accessible front face and switch panel for better operation.
