subject: Warplanes Lets You Take Home The P-51 Mustang [print this page]

There is so much to remember about the World War II, but little is known about the who and the what of the aerial battle. At the onset of World War II, Allied Forces took a crucial step of building powerful aircraft engines that would destroy the enemy - one of which was the P-51 Mustang.

The P-51 was designed and built by North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a specification issued by the British Purchasing Commission. The first prototype was launched four months after the signing of the agreement in April 1940. By the end of 1941, the first Mustang was delivered to England for test flights.

The P-51 Mustang was a single-seat and a fighter bomber used during the World War II and the Korean War. Although it was initially designed as a medium-altitude bomber, "the Mustang excelled in hedge-hopping strafing runs and long-range escort duty. It made a name for itself by blasting trains, ships, and enemy installations in western Europe and by devastating Axis defenses prior to the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy" (www.boeing.com).

Although there are a number of surviving North American P-51 Mustangs around the world, it has been the prime subject of numerous aviation replicas.
