subject: Responsible In The Process Of Mining [print this page]

Summary
Summary

Mining has an effect on many aspects of the environment, including climate, freshwater and forests. The aim of this project is to develop and begin uptake of a framework for responsible mining for leading Canadian mining companies, preferably through the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).

Background

WWF Canada is well aware of the impacts of irresponsible mining practices on the environment. Effective business engagement is key to meeting the conservation objectives associated with mining.

WWF Canada will engage with business and industry in the mining sector with the aim of delivering change within the mining sector. This will contribute to WWF Canada's missions through achievement of conservation outcomes and funding, while enhancing WWFs reputation and integrity.

WWF Canada will work with mining companies that demonstrate a public commitment to the principles of sustainability and are prepared to adopt challenging targets for change.

The project, which will operate in an integrated, inclusive way (regions, network, partners) will:

1) Contribute to international and network conservation efforts on protected areas and emissions by working with Canadian mining companies to set globally leading examples of mining practices in Canada, or abroad in other priority WWF ecoregions.

2) Engage the mining sector and its supply chain on an international certification process for best practice.

3) Leverage energy efficiency opportunities with selected companies to deliver on climate change targets.

4) Influence government decisions related to the environment by strengthening relationships and support from the mining sector.

Objectives

1) Obtain commitment from at least one company not to mine in IUCN I-IV protected areas.

2) Identify and agree to avoid and respect high conservation value areas (e.g. calving areas, FSC certified areas).

3) Establish targets for carbon emissions and work to lower footprint through improved efficiency measures/commitments and co-generation opportunities.

4) Identify opportunities and gain commitments to lower overall ecological footprint including water use, toxic emissions, and impact on species through target setting.

5) Develop guidelines to rehabilitate existing/closed mining sites including addressing the issue of biodiversity offsetting, through target setting.

6) Obtain commitment and set targets on improved transparency, information disclosure and reporting.

7) Improve staff awareness of conservation/sustainability issues outside of the office by a measurable amount.

8) Lead the development of the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) guidelines via the framework for responsible mining.

Solution

- Work collaboratively with a portfolio of mining companies that directly impact WWF Canadas ecoregional and thematic conservation priorities.

- Advance conservation via improved business practices, transform sectors by virtue of leadership, and create value-added opportunities for companies taking a leadership role with respect to the environment.

- Develop a framework for responsible mining practice.
