subject: Discovering Art While You Walk In Lancashire [print this page]

Lancashire is a county in the north west of England that is well-known for its history, heritage and food. But it is also rich in contemporary public art and this has led to walking routes being devised that take in pieces of sculpture and art that stand amongst the hills and vales of this still very rural county.

The Ribble Valley sculpture trail was the first of its kind to be set up in the county. The trail travels through a park, a quarry and a local nature reserve just on the outskirts of Clitheroe. One can also enjoy splendid views of the Forest of Bowland. There are about twenty permanent sculptures now installed along the route and these can vary from smaller more subtle pieces blending with the landscape to more striking installations that would be hard to miss. The trail is aimed to make art accessible to all, so there are activities and sights intended to engage all ages.

Another high profile trail is one that takes in all the four panopticons that have been planted in the Pennine area of Lancashire. A panopticon is defined as a structure or space that allows a wide or panoramic view. And so the four sculptures are optimally placed on summits and hillsides to afford rewarding views of the surrounding countryside. The structures themselves are very modern looking and even have acoustic properties such as the Singing Ringing Tree which acts as a sound sculpture as well as a visually stimulating landmark.

Finally, the Burnley Wayside Arts Trail is also popular with those that enjoy walking and culture. This trail is actually over two hundred miles of new paths and trails that pass through woodland and meadows right in wildlife. There is also a trail with a dozen 'finger posts' which were carved out of oak by a local sculptor. And local children have contributed to this project by providing signposts that are made from carved brick.

So, next time you are thinking of going for a hiking or walking excursion or holiday, be aware that you could also take the opportunity to appreciate art made by kids and adults along the way. And here in Lancashire you can appreciate both walking and art whatever the weather, to make for a healthy and more novel outdoor adventure for all the family. So you can enhance your enjoyment of the outdoors as long as you remember to kit yourself out with the right waterproof and windproof outdoor clothing.
