subject: Energy Saving Features of Modern HD TVS [print this page]

There are many people who when they buy a new HD TV will find it hard to tear themselves away from the screen especially as many people buy HD TVs for the first time and are exposed to a world of high definition programmes and movies that can be stunning to watch on some of the latest TV screens but sooner or later you'll probably begin to wonder how much money you're spending by watching endless amounts of TV, movies and games.

It all adds on to your electricity bill at the end of the month so you'll obviously want to limit yourself, but there are some energy saving features built in to modern TVs that could help bring down your energy usage, this is a great move by the manufacturers looking to become more green in their products but also good for people who may wander off whilst the TV is on and is no longer in use.

One such feature is if you have turned off a games console or DVD player but the TV is still on albeit on a blank screen, some people may be in a hurry to leave and so will not turn off the TV which continues to eat up power just like if you had left it on a TV channel or DVD playing. This could be a screen saver or the TV turning itself off after a period of inactivity but you shouldn't rely on this feature all the time.

A large part of what needs power and electricity in TVs is the colour and brightness of the display, this means that your TV is working harder to produce the image properly, one way to lower energy usage is to have a TV with eco-mode' or power saving mode where the colour and brightness (managed by the backlight in most TV sets) is lowered so that the TV draws less power. This is perfect for watching movies in the dark as you won't really need an incredibly bright and vibrant picture since you won't have to contend with daylight or glare.

These energy saving features are not there to solve the problem of leaving your TV on, you should still aim to turn your TV off at the wall when you are finished with it. Some TVs have even had the standby function removed altogether to help promote more responsible use of the TV so that you have to turn the whole TV off altogether rather than leave it in standby mode which still draws power.

Save money with LED TVs that use much less power and some other TVs such as LCD TV sets that have eco-friendly features to help save the environment and your bank balance.
