GM has launched ?The Diesel? version of its very popular Chevrolet Beat. The Diesel version of the very capable little car that GM internally called M300 is now called Chevrolet Beat Diesel. GM and Fiat has jointly developed a mass market version of Fiat?s popular 1.3 litre multi jet power train engine. The same engine is used by Opal and Chevrolet models in Europe, besides the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ritz, Swift Dezire, Fiat Punto, Tata Indigo Manza and Indigo Vista in India.

GM engineers at its European development center have knocked off one cylinder from 1.3 litre multi jet power train engine and they have created an entirely new 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder version engine, which they now like to call 1.0 XSDE SMARTECH. The interesting point of this engine is that, while its power output may seem meager at 57.3 bhp@4000 rpm but Torque is healthy at 150 Nm@1750 rpm from its 936 cc engine. Infact its the highest torque per litre in its class now. The car is smooth, its zippy, its fun and thats the great first impression specially one would worry about how a smaller engine like this would behave. The 5 speed manual transmissions are very smooth courtesy of the new 5 speed new gear box in the Beat Diesel. Going by purely ARAI figures, Beat diesel will give a fuel efficiency of 24 km per liter.

Chevrolet Beat Diesel engine started its life as 1.3 litre and its same one that goes into so many cars here in India and globally. With Chevrolet Beat Diesel, what GM have done is, they have chopped off one cylinder from the original 1.3 litre engine and of course downgraded it to 1.0 litre. It also means that this is the smallest diesel engine now in the entire GM family around the world. Being from a GM family it gets turbo charger which apparently is also the smallest. In turn, it is a good thing as you wont get turbo lag resulting in smooth zippy pick up minus the jerk at the maximum torque. There have been many small developments that have been done with Beat Diesel, specifically with the engine, with Indian market in mind. India is the only market that gets this specific engine and will be available only in India, for now.

The car also has a new Electric Power Steering or EPS, which is a first in this hatchback segment for GM. Unlike other EPS systems already available in the segment, EPS with Beat Diesel is more planted, has better road feedback and is therefore more precise. The Beat Diesel will offer an effective Paddle Mapping which means that the throttle response is instant and it also adapts to drivers driving habit. The Beat Diesel has an impressive Ride Feel courtesy to its stiff suspension yet not rigid which gives you cushy feel over bad roads without it being too soft. Interesting unlike most other cars in this hatchback segment, who aims to be primarily sporty, GM decided to favor ride comfort over handling for the Diesel Beat. It is good move by GM given condition of the Indian and use of preferences and even back seat drivers will happy over pot-holes and bumps.

From exterior there is nothing new in comparison to Beat petrol version. Internal design and cabin too has not been changed and remains same as petrol version. Typically when there is a new variant of the car one expects to have been little tweaked a little bit on the interiors too. But in this case with Beat diesel, nothing has been changed at all. Everything you will get in interior will be exactly like what you get in a petrol version. It works in Beat diesel favor because usually diesel variant gets less specs, in order to keep the price differential in check, which is why some of the nice fancy features and goodies start to disappear from the diesel variant. But its not the case with Beat diesel among different variant in diesel, GM will give exactly the same equipment that you get in the petrol Beat. Chevrolet Beat Diesel LS is the mid-range variant. It comes with features such as Front Power Windows, Chrome Radiator Grille, Tinted Glass and many other goodies and add-ons.

Beats cabin has been criticized as being too dark and giving a sense of less space than there is, which infact is true, since the rear window is small and high and lets in less air and light, even interior color pallet doesnt help much. Having said that material quality is good and sense of space, once you get in, is pretty likeable.

So thats the all new Diesel Beat LS, we reckon that this engine will be little gem for GM. The diesel Beat is very well built. It dons a cohesive 3 layer wet-on-wet paint application that resists rusting and corrosion. As we all know for small cars prices play a very big roll. Beat Diesel LS is very well received by the market with its perfect pricing. But there is another factor that plays a very important role when it comes to this segment and that is, how it takes on its rival. If we mention the competition, there is really just this one car that stands out, is Ford Figo.

It all depends on consumer on how they want their car to be. But Beat Diesel is aggressive and in good proposition in its own aspect. Styling wise Beat diesel really stands apart with its aggressive, bold, modern and sporty design. Beat diesel will give you a very impressive 24km per liter. So Beat Diesel is sure to give its competitors racing heart Beat.
