subject: Success Smarts [print this page]

An important reason people succeed is that not only do they possess the knowledge of what they need to do to achieve what they want to achieve; but more importantly, they have the discipline to DO what they must do in order to achieve their goals.

They put in the work. Many of us know intuitively know what we must do in order to get better results in our lives exercise more, drink less alcohol, drink more water, lose weight etc. Often times however, we lack the discipline to apply our knowledge and put in the work required to achieve our objectives.

Having knowledge of what to do is not enough, instead discipline, persistence and commitment are the catalysts that turn dreams into reality. It is for this reason that exceptional success is often achieved not by the naturally super intelligent but instead by the average person who persists at a goal until it is achieved; by those not smart enough to know their own limitations and weaknesses; those not smart enough to know that the situation is impossible; those not smart enough not to know when to give up; those not smart enough not to know when to stop trying.

In order to remain energised and motivated to constantly work towards achieving our goals, we need to do the following:

Firstly, we need to commit to doing something daily that will contribute to the realisation of our goal.. Better still,

we can commit a certain amount of time daily to working toward our goal. For instance, spending an extra half hour making more sales calls; spending 45 minutes in the

gym daily; spending 1 hour daily conducting research on how to start that dream business. Spending time any time at all, is better than nothing. Once we begin doing this, we begin to gather momentum and this makes it easier to keep going.

Secondly, breaking down our ambitions into smaller measurable step-by-step goals that will get us there is a potent strategy in keeping you motivated. By doing this, the subconscious mind accepts the goal as being far more achievable and sets to work tackling the milestones that will eventually get us there. As a result, we simultaneously work against the fear of failure while increasing our confidence every time we achieve a milestone. Many people have grand dreams and ambitions but have not taken the time to critically think and outline the steps that will get them there. They expect that things will somehow fall into place. Consequently, they drift here and there and when things dont pan out as planned, they blame external circumstances, give up and move on to the next goal. Unfortunately they fail to learn from their prior experience, repeat the same pattern in their attempt to achieve this new goal, only to get the same results. Setting out milestones is your road map.

It is the strategy that will guide you on your road to success. Remember, success is not incidental, it is intentional
