subject: Good Things Take Time [print this page]

Important work takes timeImportant work takes time. I am constantly bemused by people who want to create wealth but don't recognise this basic concept. The proverb "Rome wasn't built in a day" has been with us for hundreds of years and captures this truth perfectly. In essence, it means that if you want to build something impressive, it can't be done in a short period of time. Like all great works, the city of Rome was built over many years. There were many challenges to overcome before the goal was completed.

To create wealth overnight requires something specific. It's called a lottery ticket. Other means of quick money are likely to be illegal or unethical. Regardless of what anyone may tell you, good things take time and building wealth is no exception. It may be a clich, but it makes good financial sense to abide by the adage that if something looks too good to be true then it probably is. People are lured into scams every day chasing what they think are going to be quick riches.

A business of any nature will inevitably have ebbs and flows. These are quite natural, especially in the initial stages. Often the first results aren't as impressive as expected because expenses are greater than anticipated and a client base is yet to be established. There is no perfect road map for starting in business. Each one is unique with its own set of challenges. The key is to embrace the learning curve, be flexible in your approach and prepared to make mistakes. This is the best way to learn and improve.

It is vital to understand however, that regardless of the type of business and the strategies you employ to grow it, it will take time. This is as true for a home-based or online marketing venture as it is for a traditional bricks and mortar business. It's a trap that a huge number of marketers fall straight into. They are either fooled by clever website marketing that promises fast money or influenced by the mentality of others around them. Either way, they lose patience and quit without experiencing even a fraction of the potential that awaited them.

Rome was built quickly and it wasn't built without work. The only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary. Some marketers quit because they feel isolated and don't know where to turn when faced with new challenges. Owning any type of business is a test of your inner determination, fortitude and resourcefulness. A difference between a physical and online business is that very often the latter only requires a minimal investment. When the stakes are so low, it's easy to see why some people adopt a rather blas approach to it.

In a nutshell, the key to establishing a successful online business is Search Engine Optimisation or SEO as we commonly refer to it as. SEO is defined as the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the natural' or organic' search results. These are results that are found naturally and exclude any listings that are paid for by the site owner. The simple goal is to get your website ranked as highly in these natural search results as possible.

A simple goal yes, but not simple to achieve! It takes knowledge, work and yes, you guessed ittime. People generally have unrealistic expectations when it comes to SEO. You can't just write a few articles, or post a couple of YouTube videos and expect amazing results. It's certainly a good start and will create valuable back-links to your site. However, in the short-term, this will only offer you small improvements in your page ranking. Most SEO techniques and strategies require a number of months to reach their potential.

Ten years ago search engine optimisation happened quicker than it does now. A primary reason for this is because the engines (Google more so than the others) have developed and placed weighting factors on incoming links. These include things such as the value' and age' of a link and changed the SEO game forever. With regard to the age of a link, it gains more value as it gets older and remains in the place it was first found.

Another factor to consider is that an incoming link from a page with a low Google page rank will take longer to be found than one with a high rank. By association, these also take longer to age, gain value and have a positive impact on the ranking of your page. So taking into account that links are obtained from a variety of websites with varying page rank values, the process is like making a quality cheese or fine wine. Good things do take time.

What you do today to create a link to your website may not be seen tomorrow. In fact the true impact in the search engines is going to take weeks or even several months. The important thing is not to sit around and wait for the result. Unlike making cheese or wine, search engine optimisation is an ongoing process. You should be continually employing effective techniques to create incoming links to your website. If you don't, it's guaranteed that there are many other marketers who will beat you to that elusive top search engine ranking.

Search Engine Optimisation is a complex subject and only one aspect of online marketing. Building wealth in any capacity requires planning and an understanding of what you are undertaking. Beyond that, it requires patience and perseverance to reach your goals. Success online is simply learning the rules of the game and then playing better than others. I can assure you from personal experience, with a positive outlook and the willingness to keep learning and improving, you can be successful.
