subject: Choosing A Cosmetic Surgery Procedure [print this page]

As men and women age, they may feel dissatisfied with their appearance. Younger patients may simply wish for a better or different look. Women may see wrinkles, sagging skin or unwanted fat in some areas. Men may see their bellies drooping or a chin that they are not too pleased with. Others may wish for a better looking nose or less curving hips. This can all be remedied with cosmetic surgery procedures performed by board certified surgeons.

Some modern day popular cosmetic procedures include breast augmentations, face lifts, nose surgeries, tummy tucks, liposuction, dermal fillers, chemical peels, brow lifts, arm lifts and body lifts to name a few. Some people who have lost a significant amount of weight may be interested in some of these procedures as a way of contouring their new body shape. However, when it comes to choosing a cosmetic surgery procedure, prospective patients should speak with a surgeon to see what procedure best fits their needs since what may seem obvious to a patient, may not be appropriate for him or her. For example, often times a synthetic injection or natural fat injection can be used to easily provide some lift and fill in a specific area of a persons face, such as the brow line or for the lines that run from the nose to the mouth. Whereas in others, a brow or face lift might be the better solution.

Plastic surgeries can range from minimally invasive to slightly more invasive procedures and should only be performed after a thorough consultation to discuss indications, risks and benefits. Even the simplest procedure like Botox injections deserves the same attention in analysis by a doctor and patient when compared to a more sophisticated one. No procedure should be considered too small or easy. All procedures should be thoroughly explained and thought out without rush.

The spectrum of procedures is endless, as is the marketing of them. Magazines and television news segments may highlight the newest laser liposuction device, or one hour facelift. Consumers are bombarded by ads, social media buying deals and other methods of introduction to plastic surgery procedures. However, one has to be very careful to understand that what sounds like a fantastic opportunity or procedure may not be in their best interest. For example, a person who has lost a lot of weight and has sagging skin of the arms, face and stomach area may hear of a laser skin tightening procedure but in fact needs a more extensive body lift or tummy tuck.

It is beyond the scope of this article to talk about every cosmetic procedure.

However, what is common to choosing any procedure are some simple facts. The patient should seek the advice of well trained doctors, and have an open mind as to realistic expectations and improvements. He or she should take notes, ask questions, get second opinions and be prepared to talk about what specifically is to be improved or changed. Financial considerations are also of course very important to understand as elective cosmetic surgery could be costly. Once a patient has a good understanding of possible treatments and alternatives, the pros and cons of the procedure, expected risks, benefits, and finances, then the patient can make a decision based on these facts and feel comfortable moving forward with the surgeon of his or her choice.
