subject: Helping Humanity: Volunteering In Central America [print this page]

There comes a time in many of our lives where we begin to question the values we hold and the priorities we have set for ourselves. After asking ourselves if we have spent our time on this planet in a productive and helpful manner, many of us are forced to answer, no. We have chased material wealth and possessions, served ourselves, and placed the welfare of those less fortunate than ourselves below us. Asking ourselves these question, however, is a positive sign. It means we are are becoming self-aware. If and when we realize that we could have done more, we are empowered to change. We can begin to live for values above and beyond our own, and begin to serve others. This is the true sign of humanity.

When we come to this place, we are faced with several choices. We must ask ourselves how we can best provide assistance to those less fortunate. We must evaluate our talents and abilities and decide how to focus those abilities so that they can benefit those whose lives are far more difficult than our own. One answer is to seek out international aid organizations that specialize in matching volunteers with populations that need their services. There are many categories to choose from, so it doesnt matter what your skill set is. Chances are, there is a need for it somewhere in the world. While the greatest need is found in the areas of medicine, agriculture, and construction, there are plenty of opportunities in other areas as well.

There is a tremendous need for people with medical experience in all Central American countries, and those with medical and dental training are encouraged to volunteer in Guatemala where rural health care is rudimentary at best. And those with experience in agriculture and construction are encouraged to volunteer in Costa Rica. Their talents can be used to reinforce or repair housing developments hit by natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. Regardless your talents, there are people around the world who can use your help, and there is no greater reward than helping those less fortunate than yourself. Consider contacting your local aid organization for more details today.
