subject: Lose Weight Properly [print this page]

You can't turn on the television or the radio without hearing someone talking about how to lose weight. They may be talking about a new vitamin supplement, a new diet or some new exercise equipment or technique. There's a lot of conflicting information about how to lose weight. There are a couple of tried and true techniques, though.

The first step in losing weight is to see your doctor for a physical. Doctor's visits aren't particularly enjoyable for those with weight to lose, but it's important to have a baseline and check with your doctor to make certain there aren't any exercise or diet restrictions.

The next step in how to lose weight is to decide on a diet. This can be overwhelming and time consuming, but there are a couple of important things to look for in a sensible diet. Can you eat different foods? Our bodies benefit from eating different foods; if a diet requires you to eat nothing but cabbage, you should probably steer clear.

Also find out how long the diet has been around and look for reviews online. A diet or company that's been around for twenty years may be a better bet than a diet you've never heard of before.

Once you've decided on a diet, hit the grocery store and a home goods store. Make certain you have all the food, scales and measuring cups and spoons you need to get started.

Once you have a diet in mind, the next step in how to lose weight is to decide on an exercise plan. Your exercise plan should include aerobic activity, such as walking, jogging or biking; strength training, such as lifting weights; and stretching or toning exercises. If you're uncertain where to start, try walking. It's not overly strenuous and doesn't require any special equipment.

If you're able to make a financial investment, consider hiring a personal trainer, even just once or twice. A trainer can assess your fitness level and help you develop a personalized exercise plan.

Once you have a diet and exercise plan, find support. You can find weight loss groups online, or enlist the help of a reliable friend or family member. Have someone you can call or write when you're down or feeling unmotivated. It's natural to get discouraged from time to time; the right support can help you stay motivated during your weight loss journey.
