Experience Active Dartmoor week
Experience Active Dartmoor week

This celebrates the Olympics and aims to get Britain or those visiting Dartmoor active throughout the first week of April. The week includes various challenges and events across the moor, read on for detailed information on the events that will be hosted.

The launch day is the Saturday 31st March and will take place at the National Trust's Castle Drogo, which is a stunning place to visit especially in the spring. The first day will consist of enjoying local food, bushcraft, den building, guided walks, roof top tours of the castle, ponies and dancing. In the weeks leading up to it, events will be confirmed and you can then sign up for whichever ones you want to take part in and it's all in aid of Dartmoor Search & Rescue and the National Trust's Save Castle Drogo appeal.

With the warm weather approaching, it's the perfect time to explore Dartmoor. Here is an overview of some of the events you can take part in:

The War Horse Ride

The locations used on Dartmoor during the filming of War Horse will form the back drop for this charity horse ride. Starting and ending at Burrator Reservoir, it takes in 12 miles of spectacular Dartmoor scenery with a stop for lunch.

The route will enable accomplished riders on their own horses the chance to set off at their own pace between 9.30am and 11.30am. Those wishing to join a guided ride will have a start time emailed before 30 March.

Dare Devil High Adventures with River Dart Country Park

Join River Dart Country Park for an adrenalin fuelled adventure and challenge yourself to their 16 element Ariel obstacle course. Cross crazy bridges, seesaws, take the leap of faith and many more up to 60 feet in the air.

Fishing competition

The dates are TBC but the fishing competition will be held at one of the reservoirs on Dartmoor.

Guided walks

This is the perfect opportunity to explore the moor and go for a hike. The hike will start at Postbridge - in the heart of the moor and starts from 10am. There will be two-hour walks taking place every hour by experienced guides so you get to see the best bits of the moor.

Geocaching

This is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game where players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online. Dartmoor National Park officers will host a series of guided and self-guided geocache trails that will allow families, groups and individuals the opportunity to try this activity and to win a prize.

There are many more activities and additional activities to be confirmed. Enjoy Dartmoor and the great outdoors this spring.
