subject: Document Review: So You Know [print this page] If you've never heard of document review, it's basically the process that a lawyer of some type goes through to review all of the paperwork in a trail to determine if everything is relevant and in order. A court of law would be a mess if everything weren't organized correctly, right, and would waste lots of time.
This is in the case of a lawsuit, or litigation as it were. One person is the plaintiff, and is accusing the defendant of some sort of wrongdoing, and in front of a judge they use evidence and testimony to try to get a ruling in their favor, often by presenting the best case for themselves by documentation.
There are plenty of shows on TV about lawsuits, litigation, and the process of going before a judge, so if you want an only slightly modified version of a real courtroom scenario, simply find out when one of them is playing on a local television station, and sit down with some snacks to learn.
The ones in charge of document review are typically attorneys of some sort. They have the background and the resources to figure out how to present you in the best light, and in order to do that they need to make sure all of their t's are crossed and i's are dotted.
There are also cases when a document review is performed by a contract or temporary attorney, and they can be reasonably priced through very expensive, on a per case or per hour charge. This number depends on things like metropolitan area, what agency is being hired, and the reputation of the law firm involved. Always buy the best.
There are several cities in the United States known for their ability to do document reviews as well. They include New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, among many other smaller places. Notice that many of these are bigger cities, where more trials happen therefore people are more experienced and knowledgeable about situation that may present themselves to the public.
For the technologic types, there are also packages of document review software that are available, which have slightly different options available for things like editing. Also note that many companies and individuals outsource this type of work to places around the world, with varying degrees of quality. Always check references before hiring a lawyer or firm.
So one day, you may end up having to go to court, and that means that you will have to go through the document review process. Whatever path you take, that is one thing that has to be in complete order if you expect a ruling in your favor, so play the odds.
