subject: 8 Reasons To Join A Fraternity Or Sorority [print this page] 1)Being on a large college campus in a town where you dont know a single soul (except for maybe just the girl you had fifth period calculus with) can be scary and exciting. It can also be a bit overwhelming. Pledging a fraternity or sorority gives you the chance to meet a lot of people quickly. At least attend Recruitment Events to see what its all about. Even if you decide not to pledge your first semester, youll have your face out there and meet some cool people.
)Youll instantly make friends who have similar interests. Theres this obsolete theory that exists where fraternities and sororities only cater to one type of person. That couldnt be farther from the truth, especially when it comes to larger schools, which offer a Greek organization for just about everyone to be a part of. At the very least, you wont know until you try.
)You get an opportunity to contribute to charitable causes. Most Greek organizations are active in the community, including holding food drives for the holidays, spending time working in soup kitchens, visiting children in local hospitals, fundraising for victims of abuse, and more. Volunteering with friends can be fun, and more importantly, it provides valuable perspective to young people.
)Youll have a network of support academically. Studies show that people who are social in college and take part in study groups actually fare better grades-wise than those who study alone. Even if you dont have any brothers or sisters in your classes, youll more than likely meet someone who does, and youll instantly have a study buddy, which can be a God-send in a class filled with 500 people and a professor who spends more time interacting with the overhead projector than he does with students.
)Youll have older students who can provide advice and valuable wisdom. They can advise you on what professors to avoid, internships to pursue, cool classes to take, places to hang out, and how to balance school with Greek commitments, social life, and working a part time job to make ends meet.
)Opportunities to socialize! College is a special time in everyones lives. You should savor the experience. Do we suggest going out 6 nights a week while detoxing your liver on Sundays? Absolutely not. But going out once or twice a week after a long week of classes and library study sessions, or meeting a group of friends for dinner, can be beneficial to your state of mind, and help you cope with a heavy course load.
)It creates endless possibilities for networking. When you become part of a fraternity or sorority, youre instantly connected to a network of thousands of individuals who share your core values as a person. These people include CEOs of large companies, presidents of fortunate 500 companies, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, investors, TV show producers, magazine editors, musicians, professional athletes, and more. You never know when a relationship with one of these people may come in handy, especially when it comes time to apply for internships and jobs.
)Most importantly, joining a fraternity or sorority creates a sense of belonging a family. And when it comes down to it, isnt that what we all want?
