subject: My Very First Rug [print this page] Rug making is classified in two kinds: the handmade rugs in which full man power is needed and is subject to time and patience but surely worth the effort because the charm of the rug you will be making could definitely melt anyone's heart. Another way is through the use of machines, this could produce numerous rugs in a single day and it comes in different sizes and colors. Whether you choose to make it by hands or by machines, one thing for sure it would take an expert to produce these beautifully made rugs. However, I made my very first rug when I was 13. Well, it was a project for school. We were asked to make rugs out of several unused or extra fabric.
With the help of my mother, we went to the shop of her friend who is a tailor. There were several pieces of silk, nylon and other fabrics scattered on the floor. Supposedly we will buy those fabrics from her but she just gave it to us. To my excitement, I eagerly picked up every piece of bright colors on the floor not minding if it will go well with one another. No one can blame me, I was a kid. From there we went to other stores to get the rest of the materials. We were asked to have the following materials: scissors for cutting, thread and needle for stitching and lastly the base cloth which should have the thick kind of fabric. I don't really what to call it but I heard my mom say its wool.
After completing the materials, we rushed home to start making my very first rug project. My mother had some few instructions before we started. She told me to be cautious in handling the scissors so that I won't get any wound. She also taught me how to use the thread and needle for stitching to be sure that I won't prick my hands. Mom's are always concern, they don't want to see their angels cry so I patiently waited and listened until we began.
First we had to cut the pieces of cloth into squares. After cutting it, we did some stitching on the edges of the squared piece of cloth putting it in circles. After which those circles will be placed on the base cloth, then the steps were repeated over and over until the base cloth will be filled with those small circles. That rug was simply one of a kind, I doubt if there is one in the market. Yet I was happy with my first rug, and I loved it so much hat I didn't place it on the floor but I placed it on the table.
True enough, rugs can come in different appearance, style and color but for as long as you call it a rug it will be a rug. My rug may not be the finest rug but the thought that I made that rug is more than an achievement.
