To mark the New Saka Year, Balinese celebrates its famous Bali Nyepi festival.

Nyepi is the Hindu - Balinese New Year's day that is annually celebrated at the beginning of the tenth month or on the day after the new moon at the end of the ninth month or in March. This year 2012, Nyepi day or the Icaka New Year1934 is celebrated throughout Bali on 23rd March 2012.

Nyepi festival marks the beginning of a new lunar year and is celebrated by having a complete day of silence. On this day, everyone in Bali including tourists and locals are mandated by Balinese law to remain silent. No one is allowed to work, travel or partake in any indulgences an absolute day of total non-activity.

Balis Pecalangs or the traditional Balinese security men control and check for street security as well as stop any activities that disturb Nyepi.

No traffic of any kind is allowed, so visitors are advised to observe this custom and to stay within their lodgings for the day. This is so because it is believed that evil spirits will leave the island, thinking that the place is uninhabited as there is complete stillness.

During Nyepi, it is believed that the world is cleansed and everything starts anew, showcasing mans symbolic control over himself and the "force" of the World; hence, the mandatory religious control.

Great purification and sacrificial rites are held on the day prior to Nyepi in order to exorcise evil spirits from every corner of Bali.
