subject: Troubleshoot Your Network Connection Problems [print this page]

Many processes performed on computers today require a stable connection to the internet. When problems occur, it's important to fix them as soon as possible. Below are various different reasons why your network may be dysfunctional followed by a solution to fix it.

Trouble Connecting to a Wireless Network

The first step is to make sure that both the router and modems are turned on and appear to be working. Most routers or modems flash certain colors to show that they're working correctly. Make sure that the wireless switch is turned on if you're using a laptop that carries this option. You should also verify that your network adapters are working properly, and make sure to install the latest drivers for these adapters if you are not up to date. If all else fails, clear the DNS resolver cache.

Trouble Connecting to a Wired Network

Troubleshooting wired connections is similar to troubleshooting wireless connections. As previously mentioned, verify that your router, modem, and network adapters are functioning properly. The Ethernet cable needs to be plugged into the network adapter, and it's not a bad idea to try using a different Ethernet cable. Finally, clear the DNS resolver cache.

Network Connection Speed Issues

If you feel like the network connection speed should be faster than what it is currently, check to see if the network adapter and router capacities are compatible. Always remember that the lowest speed, whether it's from the adapter or router, will be used as the speed.

Port Forwarding Fails to Work

Some programs or services on the internet require a port within your network to be open. If port forwarding fails to work even though you followed the directions correctly, it's most likely your internet service provider. Some ISPs block specific ports to secure your network. You can try contacting your ISP to request that they unblock the port.

Password Problems

Routers allow you to create a password or use the default information provided. If you somehow lose access to this password, you must reset the router to default settings. This will erase all information that has been changed from the default settings the router came with. The method to resetting the router varies, so refer to the router manual if possible.

Hardware Shutting Down

If the same router or modem has been used for a long period of time, it's bound to overheat and shut itself down. While it's recommended to upgrade your hardware, shutting the affected hardware off for a short while can get it back up and running.

Those were just some of the reasons why your network may be dysfunctional. If none of these solutions work, it's likely certain hardware isn't properly working.
