subject: The Importance Of Freight Classes [print this page]

After getting groceries from the store, do you just throw them in the car, not caring where they land? Not usually, right? Well, this is the same case with the packages you send through companies like a Chicago delivery service. They want your packages to remain as safe and secure as possible, and thus they have freight classes to differentiate the packages. This does include the type of package, such as the fragility of it, because those will be placed at the highest priority. Although, there are several explanations to this, there are two main factors they look at.

One freight class is the weight of an object. Whether they do it as they take your object or do it later, your package will always have to be weighed properly. This is because the trucks can only carry so much weight. If they are too heavy then they have increased chances of getting into an accident and destroying all they carry. This doesn't only apply to the trucks; it also applies to any of the types of transportation they utilize.

The second main class is the size of the package. Of course, most packages are sent in standard boxes, so it is obvious what they will look like. But, some may be longer or wider than others. Or you could be shipping a large painting that doesn't weigh much but does take up quite a bit of space. This is where the couriers must play Tetris, and attempt to fit the boxes in the truck without overweighing it. Just because the box will fit, does not mean it will necessarily go with that next shipment. They also must consider how much is on each side, if one side is heavier than the other, it can cause transit problems.

As noted earlier, it's basically like a game of Tetris. Instead of worrying about odd angles, they must worry about the weight in correlation to the size. This is what makes the freight classes so important; they can help make the process simpler. If you're shipping something extremely fragile, it may have a separate class on its own. Every Chicago delivery service wants to make sure that all the extra precautionary measures are taken. This service may cost a bit more, but it is all to give you the feeling that you are being taken care of. Freight classes may seem complicated, but they are what makes the couriers that much more efficient.
