subject: Altimeter Watches Are Probably Not Required For The Great Outdoors [print this page]

Altimeter watches are everywhere nowadaysAltimeter watches are everywhere nowadays. Clearly, the public is enamored with all things to do with electronics. So amazing that they can get so many functions inside one very small product. The altimeter watch has loads of useful features that would've been absolutely astounding to people in a generation or two ago.

If you spend a lot of time outside and the woods or up in the mountains, this is the perfect "new thing" to get. While most of these functions can be found in other products, like GPSs and compasses, it's very cool to realize you have got all of those functions sitting in one product - altimeter watches.

These products are not inexpensive however, as compared with a regular digital watch that you might own. You're probably going to play at least two $300 for good quality altimeter watch. While cheaper ones are available, this is probably the average price, depending on where you buy.

Of course, it's a total waste of money unless you're going to use the features. Many people way underutilize the function and capability watch because they don't take the time to read the owner's manual. Reading the owner's manual and practicing with various features on the watch can be a real timesaver and show you things that could be a real lifesaver if you find yourself stranded out in the woods with no help.

The cool thing about altimeter watches is they have recording electronics inside the keep a record of your trip if you want to. Especially when it comes to barometric pressure and trend analysis needed in weather prediction, this can come in very handy.

The common features available on altimeter watch are - altimeter, barometer, compass, and sometimes even a thermometer. In addition to that, you can get information like tidal charts and charts that show when the sun rises and sets.

The barometer function is probably the most crucial in terms making the watch useful on an outdoor trek. The barometer sensor not only gives you barometric pressure information but also is the device that correlates with altitude, or elevation.

With altimeter watches, there is no longer any reason for anyone to get lost in the woods. Even if your primary equipment like your compass breaks or your GPS loses its power or functionality, you can get around given a map and a compass on your watch. This is a terrific failsafe plan for anyone that spends much time out of doors.
