subject: A vet tech's professional change [print this page]

We all go through a series of changes every now and then. Some are good and some can be unlikeable. It is important for you to cope with the changes to have a perfectly functioning life.

You'll be going through a lot of professional adjustment right after vet tech schooling. You'll be having examinations, job hunting and fellow vet techs. These will all be crucial as you start to grow professionally.

First of all is the licensing examination that you'll have to pass. This will determine if you are fit to legally work as a vet tech. Some states would require additional trainings and examinations. This is the best time for one to have a review of all the lessons learned while still schooling.

Passing the examination will be the key for another challenge which is to find a job. There wouldn't much of a problem because vet techs are in demand these days. But it doesn't mean that you won't show competence and dedication for the profession. Employers and veterinarians would usually go for those who have more experience and good credentials.

Just a reminder: it will be a step ahead of the other candidates if you know what an employer needs.

Now if you are already employed another set of challenges will come. The environment may no longer be ideal as what you may have seen and experienced at school. There will be animal conditions that you may not have encountered yet, there will be too much noise, and there will be death.

You will also be working with more experienced vet techs. They can be very intimidating and competitive. It will be a challenge in your part to work with them in harmony and get a tighter grasp of the hospital routines. It is going to be tough.

All of these challenges are part of professional adjustment, it happens to everybody and everybody has different reactions. You just have to be certain that you'll embrace the changes as it is and adjust to be better and not the other way around.
