subject: How To Get The Most Fun Out Of Running [print this page]

If you want to stay fit and in good shape why not have a go at running. As kids we were natural runners as we needed an outlet to burn off that excessive energy that all kids have.

When we grow we tend to lose the running habit, unless someone is chasing after us. For many of us we spend most of are time not moving at all but sitting behind a desk staring at our computer screen all day As I'm sure you are aware that sitting all day is not going to burn off those extra calories but is only going to add more inches to your waistline.

If its been a while since you last ran, then it is wise to take it easy at the start. It is not a good idea to rush into running a mini marathon as that will do more harm than good. Take it slowly and gradually. If your body is not use to running then start walking briskly each day in order to condition your body. Begin pacing yourself with a daily 15 minute walk and then incrementally increase the time to a 30 minute walk per day. If you can maintain this for 4 weeks your body will be in better condition to take on the extra exertion needed for running.

I am not a fan of long distance running. It is my belief that this style of running over long distances can do more harm than good. Running is a high impact activity and the constant force that is exerted on the joints and legs can cause long term damage over time. There have been a number of studies into cardiovascular sports that have revealed short intense aerobic workouts are better at improving your cardio strength and overall stamina. The key factor is the short bursts of intense exercise which even means a daily brisk walk to the shops or running up the stairs will benefit your physical health.

So, why should you take up running I hear you ask. The great thing about running is that it can offer you many benefits as follows:

Lose weight by burning of those excess calories

Reduce your chances of getting heart disease

Pumps you with vitality and improves co-ordination

Increases strength in the upper and lower leg muscles

Gets you out into the open and away from the confines of your house

Its free, no need for a gym membership

Invest yourself in a good pair of running shoes and get out there and start running like you were a kid again.

Make sure that you speak to a qualified doctor for advice before you embark on any form of exercise.
